Maatram Foundation, based in Chennai, is run by
experienced and skilled professionals for the past
8 years. It is a process-driven organization and the
people running the NGO work very hard to
understand students’ requirements and give them
the best possible future.

The entire process of interviewing and choosing
students is done by a robust process of collecting
data, verifying the same through volunteers, having a
face-to-face interview, and finally shortlisting
candidates for various educational institutions.

Guiding Principles

img

Confidentiality Of Beneficiaries

We believe that there has to be dignity in giving and hence the identity of the beneficiaries will always be protected. The details/photographs/videos of the Maatram beneficiaries will not be disclosed anywhere on our website, articles, promotional flyers, banners etc.,

img

Orphan Children

The first preference for the higher education program is given to Orphan kids since they do not have any support system to fall back on. Most often these children are dependant of the relatives/family friends who are unable to support their dream of higher education.

img

Single Parent Children

Preference for children who come from single parent families is given. In the low income society where there are lot of families losing the father due to alcoholism, debts etc, it becomes extremely difficult for the children to continue higher education. We believe the support provided will go a long way in the betterment of the entire family.

Girl Children

If you educate a woman, you educate a family, if you educate a girl, you educate the future. We believe Girls who get to dream and develop their character grow into vision-driven women, mothers and leaders who pass essential values and precious opportunity to the next generation. At Maatram, we truly believe in this with 80% of our beneficiaries being girl children.

Santa Kids

Teach a kid the “joy of sharing” and he/she shall spread the same to a 100 more. Maatram foundation through the SANTA KIDS projects aims to spread the joy of giving amongst children early on. Through this initiative, we partner with two schools – collect the wish of a kid from one school which he/she cannot afford and pass it on to children from another school who can become their Santas and bring their dreams to life. This initiative aims at spreading the joy of giving and sharing happiness with a lot of fun amongst kids. Over 900 kids have participated in this project so far.

Build A Library

A library is pivotal to learning and plays a key role as a space for kids to generate fresh ideas, encourage innovation, helps them improve their problem solving skills and inculcates the habit of continuous learning Keeping this in mind, Maatram Foundation is working towards setting up libraries in Government schools with basic logistics, books (both old and new) and the overall environment which will act as a catalyst for reading and for teaching.

We have set up one such library in Government Primary School Taramani, Chennai with more than 700 students having access to this library. We look forward to setting up such infrastructure in many more low income schools in the city.

Maatram Alumni Association has taken over this project and is in the process of identifying schools where such libraries could be set up.

Career Counselling

Our alumni association visits government-aided schools and government schools and educates students about career opportunities. They speak about the importance of a college education and the courses that would suit them.

Maatram Centre of Excellence

“An Investment in Knowledge pays the best Interest – Benjamin Franklin”

Through the Maatram Centre of Excellence, we aim to enable our students to constantly upskill and reskill themselves during their college years and help them specialize in fundamental concepts and emerging areas, that would give them the added advantage when they start their career.

This Year :

  • In Phase-1, 16 students were handpicked and shortlisted, based on their consistent performance in academics, aptitude to learn and more importantly right attitude.
  • 3 courses were selected to focus for this batch – C++, Data Structures, Networking fundamentals as part of the Beginner Pack and assigned one course per student aligned with their academics as well as interest level.
  • All 16 students successfully completed the courses assigned to them and cleared the certification.
  • As a next step, two intermediary courses – HTML/Java/CSS for Web Development and Python have been identified and the students are in the process of going through the certification with end of March 2021 as the target date for completion.

The Certification Plan will cover:

  • Core programming and scripting languages like C, Java, Python, HTML, CSS
  • Fundamental concepts like Data Structures, Networking, Design Patterns.

  • High impact areas like DevOps, Cloud Infrastructure (AWS/Azure), Network Administration, Information Security, Creative Design/UX
  • Engineering concepts like Digital Electronics, Embedded systems, Design & Automation in Manufacturing, Auto CAD among others.

Opportunities for the Differently-Abled

Every project we embarked on was inspired by someone who truly demonstrated a compelling need to help. Through the project, we partner with organizations who work closely with the differently abled to provide opportunities that would be very vital to them to build their career. Suguna, a visually impaired woman, who had completed her B.A and B.Ed. was forced to sell peanut candies in a suburban station, since her aspiration to become a teacher did not materialize. Most of the schools rejected her application on the lines of disability. Maatram Foundation identified her and through our efforts, Suguna lives her dream as a teacher in Mahindra World School, one of the prestigious schools in Chennai. In our effort to support people with disabilities, we had helped Suguna help find employment and sustainable livelihood. Maatram Foundation is supporting the higher education of 2 visually-challenging kids at leading educational institutions. We are providing financial assistance for the school education of 2 kids of a physically challenged parent.

Emergency relief

At Maatram Foundation we firmly believe in doing our bit every time we had encountered a humanitarian crisis through the power of partnership. Through Chennai Floods in 2015, Cyclone Vardah in 2016, Cyclone Gaja 2018 and COVID 2020 we mobilized resources and worked on disaster relief and rehabilitation.

During COVID, we extended financial support to 100+ families of our students on a monthly basis, supplied groceries to 400+ tribal families in Yercaud , 400+ transgender sisters and helped transport 40 guest workers from Andhra Pradesh who were stuck in Thanjavur. Apart from working with tribal families, sending monthly assistance to select families, we have also been working with providing rations and funds to Orphanages, Old age homes, leprosy homes etc.

We partnered with several educational institutions during GAJA cyclone to distribute essentials and meals to 117 affected villages in the delta for 37 days to 2000 people, distributed relief materials to 60,000 people, repaired and repainted about 19 schools and distributed 2500 coconut saplings to farmers to help restore their livelihood. Special mention about our Trustee Udaya Shankar who received appreciation from the Chief Minister for his amazing work.

During Chennai Floods and Cyclone Vardah, we were actively involved with the various NGO’s and Governmental agencies in collecting and distributing relief materials across Chennai, Cuddalore and other parts of TamilNadu. We distributed Ration kits to 5000 families in Chennai and Cuddalore during cyclone Vardah, 20,000 ration kits during Chennai floods and helped restore and build homes for many families.

Through the various crises, the most gratifying part for us was to see many of our students extending help to support our community despite their humble means.
