unique initiative of Maatram Foundation through which free higher education is given to deserving students from economically deprived background. Various educational institutions partnered with the Foundation give free admissions which included not just the tuition fees but also the transportation charges, hostel fees (wherever applicable), food expenses, books & stationery expenses. Students who had scored more than 85% but cannot afford to buy even an engineering application form are identified and given quality education. The entire activity is done by a robust process of collecting data, verifying the same through volunteers, having a face to face interview and finally short listing candidates for various educational institutions.

The highlight of this project is that the identity of the beneficiaries is kept confidential. The purpose of this initiative to encourage deserving candidates to study further and utilize their potentials to the best of their ability and the burden of being identified as a beneficiary where their economic status is projected each time can be humiliating for the students.

Apart from admitting the students into various Engineering colleges, the students are also trained on various soft skills and employability skills making them industry ready.

SANTAKIDS

Santa Kids, our second project was started with the aim to spread the joy of giving amongst children. Through this initiative we aimed to bring the wish of an underprivileged child come true through another child. The wish of a kid which he/she cannot afford was collected and passed on to other children who in turn become their Santas and brought to life their dreams… Aptly timed around Christmas, this initiative aimed at spreading the joy of giving, sharing and exchange of gifts and happiness with lot of fun amongst kids.

In the first year we partnered with Sishya School, OMR and Chennai Primary School, Taramani along with Teach for India in executing this project. Close to 300 gifts were exchanged during this programme. The Second edition saw Mahindra World School, Mahindra City and Christ King Middle School partnering to execute this project with close to 350 gifts getting exchanged amongst the students.

BUILD A LIBRARY

Understanding the need that a library is central to learning and plays a key role as a place for encouraging innovation, curiosity, and problem solving, Maatram Foundation worked towards setting up a library for the Chennai Primary School, Taramani, Chennai. The basic logistics, books (both old and new) and the overall environment which is now acting as a catalyst for reading and for teaching was set up through the funds received from our various benfactors.

More than 700 students have access to the Library now and we intend to set up many more of such infrastructure in low income schools in the city.
